The AL JAMA-AH political party has announced Thapelo Amad as their Gauteng Premier Candidate. Amad has been a councillor in the City of Johannesburg since 2017.
LISTEN TO THE FULL INTERVIEW: Thapelo Amid said that the government should empower young people.
He later became a member of the MMC responsible for development planning and, last year, served as the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg. He is now an ordinary councillor again, representing AL JAMA-AH as their provincial premier candidate.
Amad’s involvement in politics began during his high school days and continued as a student at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) under the RAA at Soweto Campus, where he was active in student activism. This early involvement motivated him to continue being an activist and to pursue a career in politics.
“I was identified by someone, a leader in my community, who saw great potential in me,” said Thapelo Amad, Gauteng Premier Candidate for ALJAMA-AH. He explained that ALJAMA-AH aims to establish a presence in the black community and transform its political organization.
Amad was invited to meet the party leader in Cape Town, where he presented his plan for the party. Before joining ALJAMA-AH, he conducted thorough research to understand the party’s principles and objectives.
Regarding the local economy and job creation, Amad emphasized the need for investment space. “We need to industrialize our region, whether it’s the city or the province. We need to develop programs and identify land where industries can be built.
Sections can be developed, and businesses can come in and employ people. This is how the government can enhance employment opportunities through stakeholder engagement in the economic sector,” he said.
