Jubilee Mall Brings Career Guidance to Hammanskraal Community.
The Jubilee Mall in Hammanskraal was bustling as it partnered with the University of South Africa (UNISA) to empower and assist young people in making informed career choices. Learners from local and surrounding high schools, especially those in their final year, were invited to an informative Career Expo.
The Career Expo provided young people with valuable insights into various professions from expert speakers across different fields. Various educational institutions and colleges, including Tshwane North TVET College, exhibited alongside other stakeholders such as Old Mutual.
All eight UNISA colleges participated: the College of Education, College of Law, Human Sciences, Economic and Management Sciences, Accounting Sciences, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Science, Engineering and Technology, and Graduate Studies.
According to UNISA, the aim is to engage with young people and help them make informed and strategic career choices, guiding them toward successful and fulfilling professional paths. UNISA stated, “This Career Expo aims to enable current and prospective students to make informed decisions about their studies at UNISA. We will interact with students about the range of support services available at the university.”
The institution also offers various career options to learners still in high school and those taking gap years, encouraging them to apply when applications open in September this year.
Senzekile Mofokeng, a senior lecturer from the UNISA College of Accounting Sciences, said, “Today we are at Jubilee Mall in Hammanskraal to inform the community about UNISA, specifically the qualifications we offer,”
“From my College of Accounting Sciences, we aim to raise awareness on how they can access these qualifications even if they didn’t study accounting as a subject in high school.”
Mofokeng further stated that their primary target was high school learners looking to start university next year, as well as unemployed individuals. “We also welcome graduates who would like to change their qualifications or more mature individuals already in their careers who would like to study further,” she added.
Noluthando Staalmeester, a learner from Makgetse Secondary School in Temba, Hammanskraal, attended the Career Expo and said that the event enlightened them about different careers available from various institutions and guided them on how to apply.
“The expo gave us insight into where we can go for help and inquire about subjects and qualifications. I learned that in South Africa, we have many opportunities and institutions available to help us. I learned a lot about the career I have always wanted to pursue, which is teaching, I am satisfied with what I learned here today,” she said.
Keletso Sono, the marketing manager for Jubilee Mall, commended the school learners who braved the cold day to gather information about UNISA courses and what to do after completing their high school studies.
Sono stated, “This is an event where educational institutions, organisations, and companies come together to showcase their programmes. Attendees can gain valuable insights into different sectors, learn about industry trends, and discover new career paths.
This is an annual event that we host in Hammanskraal, targeting learners from grade 9 to grade 12, but also those who have finished their matric. The Career Expo aims to provide students, recent graduates, and career seekers with a platform to explore various career options and network with industry professionals.”
