One of the largest public transport providers in the country, PUTCO, is set to launch the SmartTap electronic system for its commuters. The SmartTap system is an electronic platform that will allow commuters to purchase their trips at top-up outlets and use cards to tap on electronic machines installed in PUTCO buses.
During a media engagement session held at Roodeplaat Dam, PUTCO spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu provided details about the new SmartTap electronic system. Xulu explained that Putco is complying with the government’s vision of challenging transport service providers to adopt digital electronic systems.
“We are transitioning from a paper-based system to an electronic digital system. The reason for this is that the government has a vision for an integrated intermodal transport system, and the SmartTap system aligns perfectly with that goal,” Xulu stated.
In his presentation of the new system, Xulu highlighted that the SmartTap electronic system will simplify commuters’ lives compared to the current paper-based system. With the new system, customers will have the benefit of extended trip validity in case they miss one of their scheduled trips.
Commuters are encouraged to attend engagement sessions across the Northern Region to familiarize themselves with the new system. Xulu assured that from August, Putco will be hosting practical engagement sessions throughout the Northern Region. The spokesperson also revealed that the SmartTap electronic system will come with reduced rates for most ticket types.
