One of South Africa’s leading bank has issued an urgent warning to its customers regarding the proliferation of fraudulent mobile applications masquerading as official bank app.
The bank has observed an increase in sophisticated scams where cybercriminals create and distribute fake banking apps designed to steal customers’ personal and financial information.
According to the bank, Scammers are posing as well-known companies, such as TV-streaming services and airlines, offering fake discounts if you download an app.
“These apps dangerous and can compromise the information on your mobile device and urge our clients to exercise extreme caution when downloading mobile banking applications”
“Remember Never to download apps from links or unfamiliar, Double-check unusual requests and do your research about the offers presented”, said Nedbank.
“Keep your antivirus software updated and be cautious of apps asking for too many permissions. If you suspect you have been scammed, change your banking passwords immediately,” added the Nedbank.
Tshwane Bulletin LIVE interviewed the community regarding these fraudulent activities, and they had advice for bank users.
“We urge our people to exercise extreme caution when downloading mobile banking applications and to follow recommended security guidelines,” said one community member.
Another added, “Customers who suspect they may have downloaded a fraudulent app or that their account has been compromised should contact the bank’s official helpline immediately.”
The Bank has advised its client to install apps from official stores like Apple App Store or Google Play only. If there is negligence your money may be lost permanently.
