In the vibrant township of Soshanguve, an organisation called Unity has been making waves by supporting underprivileged communities through the distribution of food and other essential items. Established in 2021 by the determined Rotea Chiloane, Unity faced initial challenges in securing sponsors, but this year they have partnered with Bizza’s Lifestyle for their charity drive, marking a crucial step in their journey.
Unity’s ambitious vision extends beyond the confines of Soshanguve and Hammanskraal, as they strive to make an impact across the Tshwane and Johannesburg regions, and even further afield throughout South Africa.
“We want children to know that they can reach out to us for support, no matter where they are,” says Chiloane, the founder and driving force behind Unity.
Chiloane is joined by a dedicated team of four members: Katlego Mpshe as the director, Lehlogonolo Masemola as the marketer, Colleen Baloyi as the chairman, and Koketso Mathe, all of whom have poured their hearts into developing various programs aimed at uplifting those in need.
These initiatives include “Cleaning My Space,” where the Unity team visits old age homes and orphanages to ensure their living spaces are clean and well-maintained. The “Giving Back to the Community” program provides blankets and other essential items to those most in need. Annually, the team also embarks on a “Book Covering” project, visiting orphanages to cover school books and ensure children have snacks for their first day of school.
Chiloane’s motivation is rooted in understanding the struggles faced by parents who work tirelessly but still cannot provide the best for their children.
“Some kids go to school without polished shoes, so we make sure they have the proper uniform and essentials,” she explains. The team is also currently working on something special for Women’s Day, demonstrating their commitment to uplifting all members of the community.
Despite their admirable efforts, Unity faces significant funding challenges, with their activities largely self-funded. Apart from the partnership with Bizza’s Lifestyle, external financial support is crucial for the organisation to maintain its impact and expand its reach.
The driving force behind Unity’s work is the belief that education is paramount. They aim to ensure that children not only have access to schools but also understand the importance of learning. “Many children, due to a lack of necessities, develop a reluctance towards school, which Unity aims to counteract by providing the required support,” Chiloane explains.
To further their mission, Unity will be hosting its 3rd Annual All White Affair in partnership with Bizza’s Lifestyle on December 10, 2024. Embodying the slogan “Striving to Do Better for the Better,” the event serves a dual purpose a celebration and a means to raise donations of essential items like toothpaste, school shoes, shoe polish, sanitary pads, and face cloths.
The proceeds from ticket sales will be directed towards schools in need, ensuring that come January, Unity can continue its book covering initiative and provide essential school supplies. Through events like the All White Affair, Unity demonstrates that having fun and doing good can go hand in hand, inviting the community to contribute to a cause that helps secure a brighter future for the children.
