In the bustling township of Soshanguve, a remarkable story of resilience and determination unfolds. Lebogang Makola, a young man battling epilepsy, has found his calling in the world of construction, defying expectations and overcoming significant health challenges along the way.
Makola’s journey is one of perseverance in the face of adversity. Despite dropping out of high school in grade 10 due to his chronic condition, he refused to let epilepsy define his future. His path to discovering his passion for bricklaying and construction was far from linear, marked by setbacks and unexpected turns.
Makola pursued aircraft maintenance at college, a dream cut short by the complications of his illness. Undeterred, he pivoted to baking and catering, inspired by his grandmother’s wisdom. “My grandmother always gave me hope,” Makola recalls fondly. “She told me that if I don’t know how to cook, I will always starve. Those words brought light upon me.”
This newfound culinary interest led Makola to open a small baking business, which he ran with his cousin’s assistance for about two years. However, medical advice cautioning him to stay away from fire due to his condition forced another change in direction.
Fate intervened when Makola learned about Furniture World Private College (FWPC) offering learnerships. Having recently lost his job due to his health issues, he saw this as a golden opportunity. It was here that Makola discovered his true calling in bricklaying.
“I have learned so much since I started attending FWPC,” Makola enthuses. “I never thought I’d be able to do most of the things they teach us practically. I mostly enjoy the theory part of the course because that’s where you need to apply your mind, and so far, I’m excelling.”
Makola’s enthusiasm for construction is palpable. Despite the physical demands of the trade, he approaches each task with determination and a positive attitude. His dream now is to one day purchase his materials and surprise his family by constructing a building himself.
The story of Lebogang Makola serves as an inspiration to many. It demonstrates that with passion, perseverance, and the right support, one can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. As Makola continues to lay bricks, he’s not just building structures – he’s constructing a future full of promise, one carefully placed brick at a time.
