A museum is a place where people can go to learn about and appreciate art, history, science, and culture. Museums house vast collections of items, including artifacts, exhibits, and artwork, which are displayed for public viewing. They also often offer educational programs. Here are some of the City of Tshwane Museums:
Melrose House Museum
Melrose House is a popular tourist facility known for being the British headquarters during the Anglo-Boer War, and the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging was signed in the dining room.
The museum, including the stable complex, displays Victorian rooms furnished with original furniture, silver, porcelain and textiles. There is also an Anglo-Boer War exhibition, display panels on the history of the house, an archaeo-logical exhibition on excavations in the garden and temporary exhibitions.
Guided tours are conducted and visitors can picnic in the gardens. Melrose House has a small conference lecture room and a research library on Victorian and Anglo-Boer War topics.
Quarterly exhibits on Victorian topics are presented, and educational programmes are offered for school groups. Address: 275 Jeff Masemola Street, Pretoria Central
Pretoria Art Museum
Pretoria Art Museum was established to house the Municipality’s growing art collection, which had been built up since the early 1930s. The museum was officially opened in 1964. The museum focuses on contemporary South African art and regularly holds exhibitions.
The collection consists of the old masters and the Michaelis Bequest, which mainly includes paintings from the 17th century North Dutch School.
To reflect the historical diversity of art in South Africa, attention is given to South African art, including urban, rural and traditional art, and new media techniques.
Temporary art exhibitions of up-and-coming artists are displayed on an ongoing basis. Address: Cnr Francis Baard and Wessels Street, Arcadia Park,
