Wameemang Marumo’s journey from a participant in the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) to a permanent employee at the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) exemplifies the program’s success in upskilling South Africans.
Marumo, who initially joined the EPWP as a beneficiary, leveraged the opportunity to gain formal education and valuable training. The programme, designed to provide skills development, proved to be a stepping stone for Marumo’s career advancement.
Through dedication and the skills acquired during her time with the EPWP, Marumo secured a permanent position as a Data Capturer within the GDoH. This transition to full-time employment highlights the EPWP’s role in not only providing short-term relief but also creating pathways to sustainable employment.
Marumo’s success story serves as an inspiration to current EPWP participants and underscores the program’s potential to transform lives through education, training, and work experience. It also demonstrates the GDoH’s commitment to recognising and retaining talent developed through government initiatives.
As part of the efforts to accelerate the skilling of participants in the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), the GDoH has launched a skills development initiative in collaboration with various accredited institutions of higher education and training centers.
The Department has signed five-year agreements with various skills development providers such as the Tshwane University of Technology,
“Liberty College of Excellence and TVET Colleges, to accelerate efforts to upskill and “re-skill EPWP beneficiaries,” said Gauteng Health Department.
“To date, the GDoH has appointed over 4000 EPWP participants across all health facilities and majority of them have already benefitted from this partnership with institutions such as the TVET Colleges. This has led to some securing permanent appointments.”
