The newly elected mayor of Tshwane, ActionSA’s Dr. Nasiphi Moya, has highlighted key points that prolonged the process of announcing the Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs).
Moya stated that delays from various political parties occurred, but it was agreed that the announcement must be made by Monday. This led to an awkward timing for the announcement, as they understood the urgency but couldn’t rush the negotiations, aiming for a smooth start.
In a media interview, Moya said, “We needed to make the announcement today, despite the delay from the initial promise.”
Regarding the Deputy Mayor position, Moya explained that the multiparty coalition will nominate a person. “I’m not certain if it will be someone already in the Mayoral Committee or if we’ll see changes, but as the position is gazetted, it’s now a permanent position in the City of Tshwane. We must fill that position, likely by the end of this month,” she stated.
“Now that we have made the announcements, the MMCs must go to their offices and assess their portfolios in alignment with our stated objectives, some of which I’ve announced today,” Moya continued.
“On Tuesday, we will have a meeting to receive the state of the city report from the administration. While the MMCs work in their committees, we must agree on at least five priorities. These will include issues of building our fiscus, infrastructure development, basic services, public safety, and audit and governance issues, as we are currently going through the audit process,” she explained.
Moya added, “The city has been without political oversight for 18 days. The first task for the MMCs is to address the backlog in their offices. Once they are settled, we will come together to chart a path forward as a collective.”
