Forty-eight learners from Rapelego Primary School in New Eersterus, Hammanskraal, were rushed to various medical facilities yesterday following a suspected case of food poisoning. The incident allegedly occurred after pupils consumed chocolate bought from a fellow learner.
Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Education Department, reported that the affected learners were admitted to hospitals yesterday evening. Most have since been discharged after receiving medical attention.
“The symptoms presented after eating the chocolate included stomach cramps and nausea,” Mabona explained. “Our officials immediately called emergency services.”
Due to the number of affected learners, some were taken to Dr. George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa to ensure adequate care. As of the latest update, only one student remains hospitalized in a private facility.
When asked about the severity of the remaining student’s condition, Mabona said, “We have been informed that the learner is in stable condition. We are keeping the learner in our prayers and hope for a swift discharge.”
Health officials have collected samples of the chocolate for testing to determine if it was indeed the cause of the incident. “The necessary tests will be conducted, and the results will be shared with all relevant authorities, including parents,” Mabona assured.
The Education Department has dispatched a psycho-social support team to the school to assist students upon their return. Mabona acknowledged that parents might be worried and want to monitor their children closely. “We’ll reach out to them and provide any necessary support,” he said.
Mabona emphasised the department’s close collaboration with the Department of Health. “An outbreak team will be on the ground to educate the school community about safe food consumption, including how to check for expired products,” he added.
“As the investigation continues, school officials and health authorities are working together to ensure the safety and well-being of all students at Rapelego Primary School.”
