The community media landscape is grieving the loss of Aaron Maleke, a pioneering force in North West’s media industry. Maleke passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024, following a brief illness.
As founding publisher of Mmegadikgang newspaper, Maleke established himself as more than a publisher, he was a visionary whose legacy will inspire future generations of journalists and publishers in sustainable journalism.
The Association of Independent Publishers (AIP), where Maleke served as a board member, announced his passing. His newspaper became a cornerstone of independent community media in the region, known for its financial success and wide reach.
“He had exceptional skills in advertising and distribution strategy. His newspaper was the envy of many publishers due to his ongoing financial successes. At the time of his passing, he was looking at ways to further expand his distribution footprint and increase his circulation,” the AIP statement read.
Veteran publisher Thabo Mooke, who collaborated with Maleke on expansion plans, expressed shock at the loss. “Death creeps into our lives at the least expected moments and robs us of friends and colleagues,” Mooke said. “We met in the late 90s through a mutual contact in the Pretoria CBD. I immediately recognised Aaron as an astute businessperson.”
Mooke added, “His business acumen, rather than journalistic background, made his publication the most successful Black-owned media outlet in North West Province.”
Known for speaking truth to power with an uncompromising yet progressive approach, Maleke’s impact on community media will be remembered. Their recent collaboration on business realignment plans now remains unrealized.
Aaron Simon “Blesser” Maleke was laid to rest at Matlalong Cemetery following a funeral service at his home in Dihatshwane Village.
