Metrorail Gauteng has announced a temporary adjustment to train services between Johannesburg and Kaalfontein stations to facilitate critical maintenance work on the Overhead Track Equipment (OHTE). The maintenance is scheduled to take place from 30 November 2024 to 30 June 2025.
This planned maintenance aims to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the railway infrastructure. It involves upgrades and repairs to the OHTE, which is essential for powering trains on the route.
Metrorail Gauteng said that by prioritising the maintenance of its rail infrastructure, Gauteng is investing in a safer and more dependable transport system for its residents.
“This project aims to enhance network reliability, availability, predictability, and safety and increase train service capacity,”
“Upon project completion, commuters will experience a more reliable and flexible train service with enhanced safety and network capacity,” said Metrorail Gauteng.
SERVICE ADJUSTMENTS & TRAVEL ADVICE:
- Weekday Off-Peak Reduction: Off-peak services will be reduced from 10 to 6 trips.
- Peak-hour services will continue as normal and will not be affected.
- Weekend Total Shutdown: No train services are available on Saturdays and Sundays, including holidays.
- Commuters are advised to purchase valid singles, returns, and weekly 10-trip tickets instead of monthly tickets.
- Commuters are advised to familiarise themselves with the adjusted train timetables to plan their journeys and mitigate possible overcrowding.
