Rietgat Police Station commemorated Mandela Day through community engagement, addressing social issues affecting Tshwane residents. This initiative aligned with Botshilu Private Hospital’s Mandela Day program supporting local NGOs.
Station Commander Brigadier DM Govender stated that participation in Botshilu’s community program aims to encourage public involvement in cleaning NGO premises.
“We aim to bridge the police-community gap, demonstrate empathy, and reduce local crime rates through active community participation.”
โThis effort is designed to enhance public trust in law enforcement, therefore facilitating increased community engagement in reporting illicit or suspicious activities to the authorities.
Social Crime Prevention Coordinator Constable MH Lekoloane added, “We’re observing Mandela’s 67 minutes by visiting this centre and engaging with disabled community members. Although we visit regularly, today we emphasise extra care and support.”
Lekoloane acknowledged contributions from stakeholders including Botshilu Private Hospital, Katlo Development Centre, Siyabangena Crew, Youth Crime Prevention Desk, and Gauteng Traffic Wardens.
Thili Radebe, a Katlo Development Centre caregiver, said, “We’re honouring Mandela’s 67 minutes.
โWe appreciate Rietgat SAPS’s invitation and are pleased to support disabled individuals through cleaning, personal care, and ensuring their well-being.”
Katlo Development Centre, a non-governmental organisation, addresses Gender-Based Violence against Women and Children (GBV) and supports communities, including youth, through various initiatives such as expositions.
